General Visa: Information and Requirements

Please DO NOT contact the TRO to negotiate processing time.

  • Citizens of CambodiaIndiaIndonesiaLaosMyanmar, and Vietnam can apply online for an R.O.C. (Taiwan) Travel Authorization Certificate from the National Immigration Agency, Ministry of the Interior.
  • Visa-free travelers, and general visa and e-visa holders please complete the online immigration arrival card at the National Immigration Agency Website before arriving in Taiwan.

The TRO only accepts visa applications from:

  1. UK/EEA passport holders who reside in the UK
  2. Non-UK/EEA passport holders must provide a valid UK resident visa or resident card
  • Applicants who are not UK residents must apply for their visas at Overseas Missions of the R.O.C. (Taiwan) in their country of residence.
  • Applicants who reside in Northern UK (including Durham, Cumbria, & Scotland) and the Isle of Man should apply for their visas at the Taipei Representative Office in the UK, Edinburgh Office

Note for R.O.C. (Taiwan) visa applicants who have resided in or visited Afghanistan, Malawi, Mozambique, Pakistan, Madagascar, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the Republic of the Congo for four weeks or longer in the past year must submit proof of having been administered the oral polio vaccine (OPV) or inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) within the past year.

Types of visa:

  1. Visitor visa: duration of stay is 180 days or less
  1. Resident visa: duration of stay is more than 180 days with an eligible purpose
  • Resident visas are single entry permits, applicants must apply for an Alien Resident Card (ARC) and a Re-entry Permit at a National Immigration Agency service centre within 30 days from the second day of entering Taiwan.

Entry Permit for citizens from China, Hong Kong, and Macao:

Citizens from China, Hong Kong, and Macao must apply for an Entry Permit instead of a general visa to travel to Taiwan. For more information, please visit: 大陸港澳人士入台許可證申請辦法

 

How to submit your application: (please select either one)

As the circumstances of each application may vary, the TRO reserves the right to request any additional supporting documents.

Visas are often valid for three months. Therefore, applicants may submit their visa applications 4 to 12 weeks before their scheduled arrival date.

Visa Requirements:

1. Visa Application Form
  1. ONLINE APPLICATION FORM for General Visa Applications.
  2. The visa application form must be filled out online with the applicant's full name, printed, signed, and have a readable bar code on the first page.
2. Two Colour UK Passport Standard Size Photos Photos must be taken within the past 6 months on a plain white or light grey background and printed on photo paper.
3. Original Passport with One Photocopy
  1. The passport must be valid for at least 6 months and have more than one blank visa page.
  2. The passport must be signed unless stated otherwise.
  3. Applicants who renew their passports within six months must also provide their previous passports.
  4. The passport will be kept in the TRO for review.
4. Original UK Resident Visa with One Photocopy For non-UK/EEA citizens: 

  1. Submit in person: Original UK resident visa and a completed colour copy of the original size with 300 dpi.
  2. Submit by post: A completed colour copy of the original size with 300 dpi.
5. Flight Schedule

**Please fill in your intended itinerary on the application form for reference.
Please note that you are advised NOT to purchase flight tickets until you have secured a visa for travel to Taiwan.
6. Proof of Financial Support

**Please prepare one photocopy for our records if the applicant requires the original bank statement returned.
  1. Bank statements must be issued within one month, including transaction records from the last 3 months, and include applicants’ full names. or
  2. A Scholarship Certificate was issued by the Ministry of Education/Foreign Affairs. (only for studying Mandarin courses and Fellowship)

The TRO reserves the right to request additional supporting documents, such as an employment letter, school letter, police records, or attending an interview, etc., depending on the circumstances of each application after submission.

8. Payment Method:

**Please see below " Visa fee charge and processing time" for the amount you should pay and make the payment before submitting your application.
  1. Bank Transfer Information  **NOT suitable for paying to the Edinburgh Office
  2. Postal Order: available from the UK Post Office
  3. Company Cheque: We do not accept personal cheques.   

The postal order/company cheque must be issued within 4 months and payable to TRO in the UK  (A cheque with an incorrect account name will not be accepted)

9. Collection By Post to UK address only (choose one of the options below to follow):

  1. Using Royal Mail next day Special Delivery (Applicant must provide a prepaid envelope with return address written on it). DO NOT use printed stamps with an expiry date, for example:

Visa fees and estimated processing times:

The processing time starts only when the TRO receives all requirements specified in the "Visa Requirements" table above.

Please be kind and DO NOT negotiate processing time. The visa fee is non-refundable.

Other Important information:

  • It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure all requirements as specified above have been fulfilled. Applications made without sufficient supporting documents will result in delayed processing times or being denied a visa. Incomplete applications will be returned without processing. 
  • Visa issuance is an act of sovereignty. Accordingly, the TRO has the right to withhold disclosure of further explanations regarding visa approval or declination under laws and international practices. The visa fee is non-refundable.
  • If a police certificate is required for the visa application, applicants must enclose both police certificates issued by their origin country and by their current residence country (the UK). Our Taiwan overseas offices must authenticate both documents.
  • The TRO does not hold responsibility for any service not provided by the TRO, such as those by the post office, delivery service providers, agents hired by the applicant, etc.
  • For British Police Certificates, the TRO only accepts the Police Certificate issued by the ACRO Criminal Records Office.
  • Mandarin course students who have been awarded scholarships for 6 months or more from the Ministry of Education / Foreign Affairs must apply for a resident visa.
  • Mandarin course students may submit their resident visa application to the Bureau of Consular Affairs in Taiwan after completing 4 months of study with another 3 months of registration for continued study in Taiwan. For more information, please visit: Bureau of Consular Affairs - Visa for Mandarin Learning Purpose 
  • The TRO normally issues Single-Entry Visa. Should there be exceptional circumstances and needs for a Multiple-Entry Visa, please submit supporting documents for further consideration, such as a cover letter, travel plan, or flight itinerary for the next trip to Taiwan. For business reasons, please provide a company statement with the dates of future visits, and a certificate proving business transactions with Taiwanese counterparts.
