Today, The American Prospect and Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft published an article on Taiwan’s existing partnerships with think tanks in Washington, DC.
The article sought to draw a link between TECRO’s program support and articles on Taiwan published by affiliated scholars. As a free and open democracy, Taiwan stands by academic freedom. We do not influence what experts publish; nor do we base funding decisions on what experts choose to write on. Our partners know this.
Taiwan’s program support follows the same practice – and is disclosed in the same manner – as partnerships from other democratic countries all around the world. The common purpose of this is to deepen academic exchanges and promote expert discussions. These programs are part and parcel of how democracies engage with one another, and it is disingenuous to claim that they have any bearing on discourse by US experts.
Academic cooperation and scholarly exchanges are essential in deepening relationships between countries around the world, including between Taiwan and the US. We stand by our institutional relationships.
