Taiwan has always worked very closely with the United States in the field of education. To further strengthen the collaboration on international education, particularly in the area of language education, Taiwan and the U.S. signed the MOU on international education collaboration and launched the “U.S.-Taiwan Education Initiative” on December 3, 2020.
Since 2005, Taiwan has signed 26 MOUs, relating to educational cooperation with total 24 states, including including Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Ohio, South Carolina, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wyoming, Rhode, New Jersey, and Montana while inter-university links between the U.S. and Taiwan constitute 2,042 agreements.
For 5 consecutive years, Taiwan has been the 6th largest source of international students in the U.S. In the 2022-2023 school year, a total of 21,834 students from Taiwan studied in colleges and universities in the United States while 5,082 American students were enrolled in Taiwan universities, including 546 degree students and 4,536 non-degree students.
The US-Taiwan Fulbright Scholarship program, the first of its kind worldwide, has granted scholarships to more than 3,900 Taiwanese and US scholars over the past six decades. MOFA Taiwan Fellowship is established by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) to award foreign experts and scholars interested in researches related to Taiwan, cross-strait relations, Asia-Pacific region and Sinology to conduct advanced research at universities or academic institutions in Taiwan. Up to now, there have been 1,400 scholars from 93 countries accepted by this program.
Taiwan has provided the Huayu (Mandarin) Enrichment Scholarship (HES), Taiwan Scholarship, Taiwan Studies Initiatives, Visiting Scholar Program and Taiwan Fellowship Program to encourage U.S.-Taiwan students/scholars exchanges as well as study in Taiwan. By offering these education linkages and extending partnership ties between the United States and Taiwan, Taiwan will continue to support and encourage international academic cooperation for the mutual benefit and the development of human resources and inter-institutional collaboration.
