Da-Dong Art Library, the first facility of its kind in Taiwan to focus primarily on artistic items, opened April 22 in the southern port city of Kaohsiung.
“The new library will help accelerate the further building of our city’s culture,” Kaohsiung Deputy Mayor Li Yung-te said at the launch ceremony.
The municipal government contributed NT$100 million (US$3.39 million), up from the originally planned amount of NT$10 million, for the purchase of books and other materials for the new library, he said.
The library contains a collection of some 150,000 works divided into 12 categories, including painting, sculpture, calligraphy, music, architecture, dance, theater, film and photography.
Among the library’s special sections are ones for children, audiovisual entertainment, discovery, current events and wireless network use, as well as multipurpose classrooms.
The Boston Public Library was used as a reference in spatial design, with the reading area featuring classic works and best-sellers from around the world, periodicals from Japan, mainland China and the West, and audiovisual material on domestic and foreign art center productions, musicals and stage shows.
Part of the Da-Dong Art Center, the new library has a total floor space of 3,382 square meters on three levels. It features 30 kinds of art databases and some 800 e-books, along with more than 6,500 works on modern architecture from around the world in a section set up with contributions from the Kaohsiung Architects Association.
