2023 Trombone Extravaganza to be held March 13 at Capital One Hall
WASHINGTON, DC — The Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the U.S. and the An Die Musik are co-sponsoring a very special Trombone Extravaganza concert at Capital One Hall’s Vault Theater on Monday, March 13 at 7:30 p.m. The concert will feature two exceptional Taiwanese musicians, trombonist Huai-En Tsai and pianist Gwhyneth Chen, along with two Israeli-American trombonists, Nitzan Haroz of the Philadelphia Orchestra and Shachar Israel of the Cleveland Orchestra. They will be joined by another world-class musician, Matthew Guilford, bass trombonist for the National Symphony Orchestra, who is also among trombone faculty at the University of Maryland-College Park to give the audiences a top-notch, breathtaking and unforgettable concert experience.
Tsai, a Washington D.C.-based trombonist, obtained his Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Trombone Performance from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University. He is the third trombonist to receive this degree after Kenneth Hanlon and Brad Edwards. He has performed with top-notch artists, including musicians from Vienna Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, National Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, U.S. Marine Band, U.S. Army Band, Canadian Brass, and various Grammy nominees. His distinguished performances, talks, and scholarly works have been covered in Roll Call, the Liberty Times, the World Journal, Baltimore Examiners, Baltimore City Paper, the Cumberland Times-News, Washington Chinese News, the Epoch Times, the Towerlight of Towson University, the Albuquerque Tribune, the ITA Journal, WBJC, WETA, and NER of Taiwan. Currently, he is the principal trombonist for the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Washington and an Edwards Instrument Trombone Artist.
Taiwanese American pianist Gwhyneth Chen won the top prize at the Ivo Pogorelich International Piano Competition in 1993 as the youngest contestant. This also marked the biggest cash prize in the history of piano competitions, $100,000. Subsequent to the award, Mr. Pogorelich himself said of her talent, "She is too good to be true." Immediately recognized as one of the foremost pianists of her generation, the victory was broadcast internationally on CNN. In recent years, she has played joint concerts with Ivo Pogorelich in Switzerland and in Taiwan. During the pandemic, Chen replaced all international soloists to perform over 30 concerti with orchestras in Taiwan in addition to her intensive recitals and masterclasses as a Steinway artist.
The concert will feature two Taiwanese solo works: Ying-Chen, Kao's Ancient Memory and Ming-Yi, Lin's Air (World Premiere and the Taiwanese Folk Song Medley by Ang It-Hong (arranged by Yun-Chao Lin).
