Brief Introduction of Culture Center of TECO in San Francisco Bay Area
Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in San Francisco operates 2 regional cultural centers, one in San Francisco Chinatown and one in the city of Milpitas. Both centers serve the needs of Chinese compatriot communities in Northern California, Nevada, and Utah covering 275,000 square feet in land size, with a total population of 15 million and 980,000 overseas Chinese compatriots from Taiwan. Northern California has a mild climate year-round. Key metropolitan areas include state capital Sacramento in the north, city of Fresno in the middle, and San Francisco Bay Area in the center. Agriculture, manufacturing, aerospace, oil production, natural gas, and cement production are the main industries. The terrain of Nevada consists mainly of mountains and deserts. Carson City is the state’s capital. There are about 10,000 overseas compatriots residing in the north of Reno and 30,000 living in the south of Las Vegas. Tourism is the main economy for the state of Nevada. Salt Lake City is the state capital of Utah with approx. 20,000 overseas compatriots. Major economic activities for Utah include mining, agriculture, and manufacturing.
Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) was established 80 years ago and has been serving overseas Chinese and expatriates as its highest policy objectives. In order to provide the most direct service to overseas Chinese, OCAC founded the world's first Chinese Culture Center in San Francisco Chinatown in 1985. To maintain close contact with Overseas Chinese, it has a library of Chinese Books and Magazines, meeting space for rentals, co-organizing activities and to provide relevant information to overseas Chinese.

The Center serves about 710,000 overseas compatriots including 30,000 Taiwanese descents.
Because of many nonprofit organizations’ well-structured administration systems, harmonious collaborations among the groups, and countless individuals willing to step up and lead, we are seeing the overseas compatriot community continue to grow and strive in the Northern California region.
