“St. Paul used to say that we must praise God with words, work and lyrics,” said Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi at the inauguration ceremony of “Friendly Taiwan meets Fratelli tutti” exhibition held on Friday, July 1st, 2022 at the Chancery of the ROC (Taiwan) Embassy to the Holy See. He then added that “The truth conveyed by the contents of Fratelli tutti encourages us to do good but, at the same time, it is also conveyed through the artworks of Taiwanese artists. Cardinal Ravasi of the Dicastery for Culture and Education opened the exhibition with a prayer as to include the voice of Pope Francis through a passage of Fratelli tutti: “Inspire in us a dream of renewed encounter, dialogue, justice and peace. Move us to create healthier societies and a more dignified world, a world without hunger, poverty, violence and war.” Inspired by the Pope’s “Culture of Encounter,” the exhibition features 18 religious calligraphy and 12 calligraphic ink painting works created by well-known Taiwanese American artists Maw Chyuan Wang and Karen Shee. Among the guests, a delegation of authorities from Taiwan, the Holy See, as well as members of the Diplomatic Corps and religious congregations. The thirty pieces on display contain excerpts from the Bible and the Pope’s encyclicals Laudatosì and Fratelli tutti,and other inspiring phrases to highlight Taiwan’s commitment and joint efforts with the Holy See to advance global human rights and welfare, democracy, freedom, and environmental protection. As reminded by Ambassador Matthew S.M. LEE: “The similarities between Taiwan and the Holy See are not only in the forms of artistic expression, but also in the values shared by both sides: democracy, freedom, and human rights.” “Friendly Taiwan meets Fratelli tutti” exhibition celebrates the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the Holy See by combining the Sacred Scripture with the beauty of Taiwanese calligraphy to give the audience an original and innovative experience.
