TECO’s Chief at panel discussion at Stanford University (April 9, 2014)
On April 9, the Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law (CDDRL) at Stanford University gathered to watch Taiwan’s President Ma Ying-jeou’s teleconference with the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, DC, earlier that day.
At the original teleconference between President Ma and CSIS, the president spoke for 20 minutes before taking questions. An intimate gathering of influential leaders participated in the discussion afterwards. They included Dr. John Hamre, president and CEO of CSIS; Dr. Christopher Johnson, Senior Adviser and Freeman Chair in China Studies at CSIS; Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart, Co-Chair of the Congressional Taiwan Caucus; and Paul Wolfowitz, the former president of the World Bank.
President Ma spoke on the topic “Soar on the Wings of Partnership” elaborating on the strong and solid relationship between the Republic of China on Taiwan and the United States. In his speech, he commented on the 35th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act (TRA), the overarching congressional act outlining relations between the US and Taiwan. He continued on to emphasize the island’s efforts to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a comprehensive multilateral free trade agreement with the objectives of addressing emerging trade issues pertaining to the environment, labor and intellectual property rights.
The CDDRL’s panel discussion took place after the attendees watched President Ma’s speech. The Stanford gathering included Larry Diamond, Thomas Fingar, Kharis Templeman and TECO’s Chief Bruce Fuh.
