Director General Scott Lai hosted a "Taiwanese Business Leader’s Luncheon" in San Jose on August 18 and invited Mayor of San Jose, Sam Liccardo, as the honored VIP guest. Companies in attendance include Supermicro, Global Unichip, Acer, Industrial Technology Research Institute North America Branch, The Silicon Valley Chinese American Computer & Commerce Association, Monte Jade West Science & Technology Association and other local Taiwanese business leaders. The participants introduced their business and their areas of need from TECO and the local municipal government, and exchanged views on the deepening Taiwan-San Jose bilateral industrial cooperation.
Director General Lai said that San Jose is the core city of Silicon Valley, and its technology industry is closely linked with Taiwan’s industries. Taiwanese businessmen located in San Jose play an important role in bilateral business connections. Under the US-Taiwan Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue framework, the continuous discussion of supply chain, 5G, telecommunications security and other related issues will help to develop closer economic and trade cooperation between Taiwan and San Jose and deepen bilateral partnerships.
Mayor Liccardo expressed his gratitude to TECO for arranging this meeting, and expanded upon the economic contribution and employment opportunities created by Taiwanese businesses to the city. The attendees came from a comprehensive array of industries such as foundry, IC design, consumer electronics and venture capital. The participants enjoyed a very lively discussion and exchanged their varying opinions.
San Jose is the 10th largest city in the United States, and its high-tech industry continues to flourish. In 2020, it was named the most innovative local government in the United States. The city’s chief information officer Rob Lloyd was invited to be the speaker of the CTALK International City Exchange Conference at the 2021 Taipei International Smart City Exhibition in June of this year, sharing the city’s experience in promoting digital governance. San Jose is also a sister city of Tainan city in Taiwan. We look forward to more experience-sharing and cooperation in economic and trade development after the epidemic.
In addition to Director General Lai and Mayor Liccardo, the attendees included San Jose Chief Economic Development and Land Use officer Kelly Kline, Supermicro co-founder Wally Liaw, Senior Vice President Ivan Tay, Global Unichip North America General Manager Jerry Chen, Acer Pan America Region Vice President Chris Chiang, Industrial Research Institute North America Branch General Manager Sean Wang, The Silicon Valley Chinese American Computer & Commerce Association President Limin Hu, Monte Jade West Science & Technology Association President Peter Hsieh, TECO Director Ellen Chen, Deputy Director Martin HOU and Secretary Jason Liu.
