The Government Information Office launched a website Dec. 15 celebrating one hundred years of friendship between the ROC and the United States.
One Hundred Years of Friendship—Photos and Stories of Interaction and Exchanges between the Republic of China and the United States describes military exchanges and economic relations between the two nations, as well as the ties of friendship between the two peoples.
According to the GIO, the website aims “to foster clearer understanding of the strong and deep connections and origins behind the century of friendship between these two countries.
“The support and influence of foreign countries has played a major role throughout the past century, spanning the war-torn and chaotic early years of the ROC to its abundant successes in politics, economics, culture and arts in recent times. Of all such nations, the ROC’s interaction with the U.S. has been the closest, with the most far-reaching impact.”
The website contains 30 carefully chosen photos, including one that shows the Taipei Film House, which used to serve as the official residence of U.S. Ambassadors. Another picture shows Madame Chiang Kai-shek during her visit to the U.S. in 1943, while yet a third one highlights the role played by the U.S. in helping Taiwan carry out medical and public health reforms during the 1950s and 1960s.
“We hope friends at home and abroad gain an even greater appreciation of the durable bonds of friendship that have developed between the ROC and the U.S. over the years through the narratives and photos on the website,” the GIO said.
