The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Republic of the Philippines falsely claimed that “Taiwan has been China’s territory since ancient times” and “The One-China Principle is a Universally Recognized Basic Norm Governing International Relations” on March 18 and 19, 2024. The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in the Philippines solemnly reiterates that the Republic of China (Taiwan) is a modern democratic country that actively defends its democratic system and respects human rights and the rule of law. Neither democratic Taiwan nor autocratic People’s Republic of China is subordinate to the other. The Chinese Communist Party regime has never governed Taiwan, and Taiwan is not a part of the PRC. No distorted narrative regarding Taiwan’s sovereign status can change the status quo across the Taiwan Strait or internationally recognized objective facts.
UNGA Resolution 2758 addresses only China’s right of representation in the United Nations and makes no reference to Taiwan in its entire text. The resolution neither authorizes the People’s Republic of China to represent Taiwan in the UN system nor calls Taiwan a part of the PRC. Furthermore, it does not make a determination on the status of Taiwan, does not preclude countries from having diplomatic relations with Taiwan, and does not preclude Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the UN system. The claim made by the Embassy of the PRC in the Philippines is a distorted and politically motivated misinterpretation of UNGA Resolution 2758.
Taiwan successfully completed its presidential election on January 13, 2024, once again showcasing its mature and stable democracy and garnering widespread international recognition. The people and government of Taiwan will continue to steadfastly uphold the values of democracy and freedom and firmly safeguard national sovereignty. Taiwan will continue to strengthen cooperation with diplomatic allies and like-minded countries, preserve peace and security across the Taiwan Strait, safeguard the free and open Indo-Pacific region, and maintain global stability and prosperity.
