Majuro, August 21, 2024—Ambassador Steve C.C. Hsia of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to the Republic of the Marshall Islands, on behalf of the ROC (Taiwan) government, donated $200,000 from the “Taiwan-RMI Adaptation and Contingency Fund for Climate Change” to the Marshall Islands government. The donation was formally received by Minister-in-Assistance to the President and Environment Bremity Lokjohn and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Kalani Kaneko, both of whom expressed deep appreciation for Taiwan’s continued support in the Marshall Islands’ efforts to combat climate change.
The funds will be directed towards the establishment and operation of the "RMI Resilience and Adaptation Trust Fund," a crucial initiative aimed at bolstering the Marshall Islands’ resilience to climate change impacts.
In 2023, Taiwan signed a memorandum of understanding with the Marshall Islands government to establish the "Taiwan-RMI Adaptation and Contingency Fund for Climate Change," committing $1 million to the fund. Of this amount, $800,000 has already been used to construct a seawall in the Jenrok area of Majuro Atoll. The remaining $200,000 donated this time will serve as a foundation for the Marshall Islands government to adapt to the impacts of climate change and enhance the nation's resilience.
Climate change is an urgent global challenge. In recognition of this, our President Lai Ching-te established the National Climate Change Committee shortly after taking office, underscoring Taiwan’s commitment to taking proactive measures against climate threats. Taiwan also remains dedicated to collaborating with diplomatic allies and like-minded countries to address the challenges of the climate crisis.
