On June 11, upon invitation by the city government of Lommel, Ambassador Roy Lee attended a debriefing on their experiences at the 2024 Taipei Smart City Expo, which took place in late March.
During the discussion, Alderman Joris Mertens, sustainability policy expert Koen Berghmans, and urban development expert Jolien Janssen all affirmed that their visit to the exhibition was very fruitful. While in Taiwan, they exchanged expertise and experience on the topics of renewable energy development, smart mobility, shared transportation, and public space planning with participating cities from various countries. The delegation was deeply impressed and praised Taiwan’s achievements in advanced technology, infrastructure, and civic quality. They also shared their local cultural experiences of visiting night markets, enjoying dumplings, hotpots, and herbal tea, as well as using the MRT and Ubike systems. Alderman Mertens further emphasised that the trip was certainly a wonderful experience and a once-in-lifetime memory!
In recent years, Lommel has moved away from the mining industry and is dedicated to promoting the green transition. The modern city hall, completed in 2006, and the public-private partnership Kristal Solar Park are the best representations of the city’s progress towards becoming a compact green energy city.
