In an exclusive interview with Stephen Sackur, host of the BBC’s HARDtalk programme, Ambassador Tsai Ming-Yen said that the international community is paying close attention to the war in Ukraine, which stands as a confrontation between democracy and autocracy.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine shows that authoritarian states use force at will to challenge the international order, and that democratic societies should unite to raise the cost of invasion and stop other authoritarian states around the world from replicating that pattern of aggression, the Ambassador said.
Ambassador Tsai also pointed out that Taiwan is continuing to improve its defensive and asymmetric warfare capabilities, and hopes that it can work with other democracies to deter China from acting recklessly through a system of "integrated deterrence". In addition, Tsai noted, in the wake of the war in Ukraine, the global democratic community should consider how to reshape the security of supply chains in key industries such as energy, food and semiconductors in order to reduce dependence on the Chinese market.
The BBC’s HARDtalk programme aired the interview on 11 and 12 April with the title " Tsai Ming-yen: Could Putin's strategy be a template for China to follow?”, on the BBC World News television channel and BBC World Service radio channels in 187 countries worldwide.
